Everything you need to know about 0% VAT (zero-rated)
The zero rate (0%) is a unique feature of the UK VAT system. Zero-rated goods and services are technically subject to VAT, but at a rate of 0%, meaning no VAT is charged to the consumer. Crucially, businesses selling zero-rated goods can still reclaim input VAT on their purchases, unlike exempt supplies.
Zero-rated items include most basic food items (excluding restaurant meals, hot takeaway food, confectionery, crisps, ice cream, and alcoholic drinks), children's clothing and footwear (for children under 14), printed books, newspapers and magazines, public transport fares, and prescription medicines and medical supplies.
Practical example: for a product priced at €100.00 excl. VAT at the zero rate, the VAT is €0.00 and the price incl. VAT remains €100.00. The distinction matters for businesses, as zero-rated suppliers can still recover input VAT, providing a significant cash-flow advantage over VAT-exempt businesses.
