Storage

A whole cabbage keeps up to 2 weeks in the vegetable drawer of your fridge. Wrap it in a damp cloth to extend freshness. Once cut, cover the exposed surface with cling film and use within 4–5 days. It freezes well after 2 minutes of blanching.

Origin

Cabbage has been cultivated for over 4,000 years. Originating from Atlantic European coasts, it was already consumed by Celts and Romans. Ancient Greeks considered it a universal remedy. Over the centuries it diversified into numerous varieties adapted to temperate climates.

Did you know?

In France, the expression "faire chou blanc" (to draw a blank) has nothing to do with the vegetable — it comes from the Berry dialect "coup blanc", meaning a missed shot in skittles.
